Did you know the enneagram is a traditional symbol for transformative processes?
What we learn from the enneagram symbol is just as interesting as what we learn from the enneagram as psychological model. This famous symbol includes several ancient wisdoms, spiritual lessons and universal ‘laws’.
It’s likely that you’re already familiar with lots of these!
When you figure out how these wisdoms, lessons and laws are hidden in the symbol, it will help you remember permanently. You will be able to ‘read’ the hidden messages, which hands you a powerful tool on your spiritual path. Momentarily this path is quite popular again, and transformation is getting all kinds of attention.
But what is transformation exactly and how does the process work?
Despite all the splendid articles you can read about transformation, it’s not an easy thing to understand. It becomes more clear when you get familiar with the three big steps in a transformative process. These steps are part of the first universal or spiritual law which is hidden in the enneagram symbol. This is the Law of Three – also known as the Law of Creation – which one way or another relates to creation or change. Not because that something is worth striving for, but ‘cause it inherent to nature and therefore to our own nature as well. The Law of Three reminds us that nothing in the universe is permanent. That means we, our inner state of being and our life aren’t either. For example, you’re not the same person as when you were twelve years old. Are you?
The Law of Three and Creation shown in the enneagram symbol:
These points have the following meaning and form the next steps in a transformative process:
Point 3 is the first step in a transformative process
During this step you discover (dis-cover) your deepest inner self: you become truly honest with yourself about who you are. This feels like waking up: you start noticing (seeing and feeling) things about yourself which you weren’t aware of before. This step requires to rest and slow down in order to observe yourself: your behaviour in the outside world as well as your inner pattern of thinking and feeling.
You will learn to see clearly with which personality type you have identified unconsciously and which believes and illusions you’ve developed. During this step you will discover the hidden controllers in your shadow. Therefore this isn’t the easiest part in your transformative process. It’s imperative, though: you have to face something in order to let it go.
Therefore the psychological enneagram is a mild and powerful tool, because it already describes the several personality structures on a deep level. You can use it as a mirror. Finally, this step inherits the process of dis-identification: when the moment comes you recognize your identifications and see how these hold you back or cause suffering, the need comes up to let them go. Dis-identification is psychological jargon for letting go. This is the first big step to inner liberation and therefore to transformation and self-realization.
The next two steps take place in the symbol at points 6 and 9
I will describe these steps very briefly now and will discuss them further during the next two blogs.
Point 6 is the second big step in a transformative process
This process kicks in when you start letting go (dis-identification). What you let go are, for example, defence mechanisms belonging to your personality structure (ego). This will activate all kinds of emotions from which you possibly didn’t even knew they existed.
Point 9 is the third big step in a transformative process
This process takes place after you’ve had the courage and persistence to surrender to the inner processes at point 6. It’s mainly about integration and finding a new inner balance or status quo.
I also have questions for you!
In this blog I briefly spoke about the theory belonging to point 3, the first big step in every transformative process. However, I work with the enneagram in the Narrative Tradition which means your story is leading, not the theory. That’s why I, as enneagram teacher, much rather hear your story. What do you recognize from the theory in your own life/on your own path of growth?
Share your thought(s)/question(s) on one or more of the following points:
What was an important discovery and insight in yourself? Which gained insight regarding to identification, or believe, or illusion has altered you and therefore possibly your life?
What interested/inspired you particularly in this blog? What works for you? Or what would you like to learn more about?
Do you have questions for me? Feel free to ask, I’m happy to answer them!
As a token of gratitude for your contribution I will send you a digital article about the full enneagram as transformative model (which includes all nine points).
